Need a hand?
Setup guides, activation help, billing answers and fixes for the usual snags.
Getting started
Get Max Mouse Mover running on any device.
Install the Chrome extension
The extension suits Chromebooks, and any computer where you can't install desktop software.
- Open maxmousemover.com/chrome and follow the link to the Chrome Web Store.
- Click Add to Chrome, then Add extension.
- Click the puzzle-piece icon in the toolbar and pin Max Mouse Mover.
- Open it and use the toggle to start.
Activation & licenses
Unlock the full version after you subscribe.
Where is my activation key?
Your key is created the moment your subscription goes live. You can find it in two places:
- The subscription email we send right after checkout.
- Your account page. Sign in at maxmousemover.com/account and look under "Activation key", where a Copy button sits next to it.
A key looks like ABCD-1234-EFGH-5678: sixteen characters in four groups. It works on every computer where you sign in to the extension.
I paid, but the app says "No active subscription"
Nine times out of ten the app is signed in with a different email from the one you used at checkout, such as a work address instead of a personal one, or a typo.
Quickest fix
Use your activation key. It unlocks the app whichever email is signed in:
- Log in at maxmousemover.com/account with the email you paid with, and copy the key.
- In the app, open Account → Have an activation key?, paste it, and press Activate.
Still stuck?
Contact us through maxmousemover.com/support and include the email you paid with. We'll sort it out.
How many devices can I use?
One subscription covers every computer you sign in on. There's no per-device fee.
Use the same activation key, or the same account, everywhere.
How does the free trial work?
Each new account starts with a 3-day free trial that has every feature and needs no credit card. The clock starts the first time you run the app, and the Account screen shows how many days are left.
When the trial ends, the app stops moving the cursor until you subscribe. Nothing is charged on its own and nothing gets deleted.
Account & billing
Plans, payments, passwords and cancelling.
Plans and pricing
- Monthly: $8.99 a month.
- Annual: $80 a year, about 26% less than paying monthly.
Both include every platform, every feature and automatic updates. Switch plans or cancel whenever you want.
Reset your password
- Go to maxmousemover.com/account and click Forgot password?
- Enter your email and send the form. A reset link will follow.
- Open the link within 1 hour and choose a new password.
No email? Look in spam, and check you used the address you registered with. For security, the confirmation is identical whether or not an account exists.
Update your card or cancel
- Sign in at maxmousemover.com/account.
- Press Manage plan & billing to open the secure billing portal.
- There you can change your card, see invoices, switch plans or cancel.
If you cancel, your subscription stays active until the end of the period you've paid for. There's no cancellation fee.
Refunds
If the app isn't working for you, contact support first, because most problems are quick to fix. If you'd still like a refund after that, get in touch and we'll look after you.
The 3-day free trial is there so you can check that it works on your setup before you pay.
Using the app
Everyday controls and settings.
Start and stop
Chrome: click the extension icon and press the power button.
A running timer is shown while it's on, so you always know its state.
The Away Brief
While the app runs, MMM logs the notifications that arrive. When you return to your computer, the Brief tab opens with a summary of what you missed, grouped by app, newest first. Press Done to clear it.
- Chrome: it picks up notifications from web apps open in your tabs (Slack, Gmail or Teams on the web, for example) and new unread counts in tab titles.
The brief stays in your browser and is never uploaded.
Insights and how hours are counted
The Insights tab (a card in the Chrome popup) adds up the time MMM has kept your computer awake. It shows:
- Hours covered, your total since you started.
- Last 7 days, with a bar per day and today highlighted.
- Sessions, Away covered (the share of that time you were truly away from the keyboard) and your streak of consecutive days.
Everything is calculated on your device, so it works offline. Each app keeps its own tally.
Cadence and movement settings
Open Settings (the gear icon) to tune the behavior:
- Cadence: how often the cursor nudges. "Human" randomizes the timing; the other modes are steadier or more relaxed.
- Movement: how far the cursor travels. Smaller is subtler, larger is easier to see.
- Launch at login: start the app on its own when you sign in.
Most people are fine with the defaults: small, randomized moves.
Troubleshooting
Fixes for the problems we hear about most.
The cursor isn't moving
Try these in order:
- Is it on? Check that the toggle is active and the timer is ticking.
- Is your plan active? The Account screen shows your status. If the trial or subscription has expired, the app won't move the cursor.
- Look closely. The movements are deliberately tiny and spaced out. Hold the mouse still and watch for a small nudge.
- Restart the app, then the computer if you need to.
My computer still falls asleep
The app prevents idle sleep by keeping input going, but a few things can override it:
- Closing the lid always puts a laptop to sleep, and nothing running on it can stop that.
- Battery power: unplugged laptops may still dim or sleep the display. Plug in for long jobs.
- Company policies can force a screen lock on a timer no matter what you do.
For long tasks, plug in and set your power options so the display stays on.
I can't log in or create an account
"User already exists" while signing up normally means you already have an account, often one created automatically when you subscribed. Log in instead, or reset your password.
Wrong password? Use Forgot password? on the sign-in page for a reset link.
Not sure which email? Look at your purchase receipt. That's the address your plan sits under.
You can also skip signing in and activate with your key on the app's Account screen.
How it works
What happens under the hood.
What does Max Mouse Mover do?
It makes tiny, human-like cursor movements at randomized intervals, then returns the cursor to where it started. Your operating system counts that as real input and resets the idle timer that triggers screensavers, sleep and screen locks.
The result is that long downloads, renders, installs and presentations carry on instead of being cut short by an idle machine.
Will it get in the way of my work?
No. Each move is a few pixels, and the cursor goes straight back, so what you're doing isn't disturbed. The instant you touch the mouse yourself, your input takes over.
You can pause it at any time with the toggle.
Is it safe? What about privacy?
The app only moves the cursor. It doesn't log keystrokes, capture your screen or read what you're working on.
The extension asks Chrome only for the permissions it needs to do its job, and nothing else.
Our Privacy Policy has the full details.
Software or a hardware jiggler?
Hardware jigglers are USB dongles or motorized pads that physically shift your mouse. They cost more, take up a port or desk space, can't be scheduled or tuned, and a moving mouse is easy to notice.
Software costs less, takes no desk space, is adjustable, and covers every device you own on one subscription.
